A Bold Rainbow Tag with Texture & Sparkle
There’s something magical about color when it refuses to sit still. When it stretches, fades, deepens, and glows all at once… it creates movement and atmosphere across the entire project.
Today’s tag is exactly that kind of piece.
We’re building a bright, dimensional tag using layered rainbow stencils, sparkle texture paste, bold word dies, and a vibrant moth that feels like it flew straight out of the color itself.
Let’s dive in 💚

Make a Moth Set - Stevie
Hi, Hey, Hello Word Dies - Big & Bold
Creating the Rainbow Background
I started with white cardstock and coordinating ink colors to create a smooth ombre blend. Instead of a traditional blend, I angled the color flow from the upper right corner down to the bottom left adding more ink as I work my way to the bottom left corner.
This diagonal movement gives the eye a path to follow and instantly makes the background feel more dynamic.

Adding Sparkle & Dimension
Once the ink blending was complete, I brought the second layering stencil back—but with a twist.
I shifted it slightly off-center and applied sparkle texture paste through the stencil. This creates a layered effect where the eye catches both the original inked pattern and the raised, glittery design dancing just above it.
It’s subtle movement… but it makes a huge impact when the light hits it.
Then I set the panel aside to dry. Once dried you’ll have transparent dimension with gold sparkle.

Die Cut the Elements
While the background dried, I moved on to the focal pieces.
For the sentiment, I die cut:
The “Hey” shadow layer from metallic gold cardstock
The “Hey” word layer from purple cardstock
Layering these together gives the sentiment both shine and weight, helping it stand confidently against the colorful background.
Next came the Stevie moth, cut from:
Purple, green, and yellow cardstock for the wings
Metallic gold cardstock for the body and accents
I assembled the moth using the base layer as a guide, building up the dimension with each piece.

Building the Tag Base
Using a nested tag die set, I created:
Two larger white tags (one for the base, one for a clean writing surface)
One smaller tag from the rainbow background panel
Before assembling, I added a bright lime ink blend around the edges of one of the larger white tags. This creates a glowing frame effect that peeks out from behind the rainbow layer.
Then I centered the rainbow tag on top.

Bringing It All Together
Now for the fun part… composition.
I placed:
The moth in the bottom right corner
The “Hey” sentiment above it, slightly centered
This creates a visual triangle that guides the eye naturally across the tag.
To finish it off, I added:
Flat-back sequins in coordinating colors
Bright pink yarn through the tag hole for a bold finishing touch
Finally, I adhered everything onto the second white tag to keep the back clean and functional for writing.

💚 Final Thoughts
This tag is all about letting color take the lead and then supporting it with texture, shine, and bold focal elements.
The shifted stencil technique is one of my favorite ways to add interest without adding bulk, and pairing it with metallic accents and layered die cuts creates a project that feels full of life from every angle.
If you love projects that combine color movement, dimension, and a little sparkle drama, this one is definitely worth trying.
